Bio

Sinclair Vicisitud is a (born-and-raised) Los Angeles artist who has previously exhibited in group shows at Wönzimer gallery. His first solo exhibition is presented by Reisig and Taylor Contemporary in Los Angeles. He has also participated in Art Market San Francisco and Benefit 2023 with the gallery. Vicisitud’s paintings are both autobiographical and allegorical, equivocally drawn-out from life, literature, and split mythologies.

Working in oil, acrylic, charcoal, and mixed-media, Vicisitud’s figural, expressive work usually takes-place through a practice of painting that interweaves gestural imprints and studied forms. However, this surface-process is often navigated through the multi-dimensional, sculptural features of the canvas or frame. At times, their (initially) painterly work is totally transformed into a sculptural object.

Beginning with their (chosen) name, their work takes the form of a rattling against the strictures of their own perceived identity. They work with themself as the place of an otherness, an errancy—a churning between darkness and light. Their raw, hauntingly expressive work shifts and moves, but always re-finds its footing through the brutal honesty of their practice: working with what they have, when they have it, and while they can.

“My Statement

I don’t want to do this. By this I mean glue my ass down to the chair and write a “resume”. It’s not that I am beyond that, it’s not that I am incapable; it’s not that I am lazy. I am filled with great fervency that once I begin, it’s hard to stop.  Torching the art “world” with nothing but complaints because I am unseen, overlooked like your first crush Jake England or Allison weaver, skipped over like the last slice of bread. Everyone calls to submissions but choose rather those they’re friendly with. I would think the rubbing of the shoulders great friction can cause a great environmental economical surge. Fuck electricity and wind turbines, we have shoulders. I am new to all this, I admit. The world may not need another artist, I admit. But I can’t seem to shake this off; painting, writing, composing let alone creating with what these hands crave to be done. Sinclair just wants to take space on those walls amongst the rumors, vino filled small plastic cups that hold on tighter than a granny walking her grandson across the street in oncoming traffic with blind drivers. Sinclair just wants you to see him. Sinclair just wants to paint. Sinclair will always paint. Sinclair will always be a prisoner to his mind and to his hands. It’s a lifelong sentence; you should give him a shot whilst he’s on this little blue planet.

My trajectory? hmm where do I begin. I guess I can start with a joke like in any given awkward social setting, as far as red cup to a bin. Or I can be professional? Though I see myself as, and would rather be an unprofessional professional. Or maybe simply a red cup? HA.

Though in all seriousness, I envision my trajectory to be read on paper as somewhat hard to follow. But if you were to ask me of how the circumstances came to be in person, in a chaise lounge bantering about my life; then *snap* ... you would get it. It's in my name VICISITUD.

How about we translate it to English; Vicissitude.

Heres what Merriam-Webster has to say;

Vicissitude (noun)

vi·?cis·?si·?tude | \ v?-'si-s?-?tüd  , vi-, -?tyüd \

Definition of vicissitude

1a : the quality or state of being changeable : MUTABILITY

b : natural change or mutation visible in nature or in human affairs

2a : a favorable or unfavorable event or situation that occurs by chance : a fluctuation of state or condition

the vicissitudes of daily life

b : a difficulty or hardship attendant on a way of life, a career, or a course of action and usually beyond one's control

c : alternating change : SUCCESSION

and that is all that could be defined.

At least. . .until I arrived.

 …Cheers”
